Fun And Relaxation In The Lake
District by Southlakeland Parks
|
More than ever, people are
looking for places to vacation where they don't have to contend with
the crowds, noise and overall blare of everyday life. They want to get
away from it all. The Lake District has gradually become a favorite (if
largely undiscovered) destination for those who relish a small, quiet
slice of life as opposed to the sights and sounds of typical tourist
spots. There's plenty to do when you're not relaxing or enjoying the
unhurried pace of those who live there. Below, we'll describe a few
activities you should make time for during your visit.
Tours
Of The Lake District
Take
advantage of one (or more) of the tours offered by the Blue Badge

These
tours focus on a variety of different passions including literature,
photography, gardening and even murder mysteries. Steeped in the flavor
of the local culture, the Blue Badge Guides have been awarded for
excellent service over 50 years. Alternatively, you can enjoy any number
of bus tours that will take you through specific parts of the Lake
District, providing an historical context for the sights.
Museums
And Other Attractions
There
are a number of museums throughout the Lake District. For example, built
into a 17th century townhouse is the Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery.
You'll find paintings from the period of the Old Masters as well as a
variety of events for both adults and children. If you prefer something a
little different, visit the Jefferson house where you'll learn the dark
history of rum set in the original cellars and courtyards of 1785. You'll
hear stories of Blackbeard and his pirates along with the sinister
stories of the slave trade from the ports of Whitehaven to the villages
in Africa.

Immersing Yourself In
Culture
For
those who'd like to experience some of the local culture, there are
several events to take advantage of. The Keswick Jazz Festival is a
5-day musical romp that brings together 150 jazz bands in various
venues throughout Keswick. If crazed and unusual delights are closer to
your heart, visit the Festival of Fools. It's another 5-day event that
includes side shows and performances by jesters (perfect for children).
If art is your passion, you'll want to make time for the annual
Printfest which showcases contemporary original prints that you're
unlikely to see elsewhere. There, you can mingle with other art
enthusiasts and even speak with the artists whose prints are on
display.

Enjoying
Your Stay
The
Lake District UK is still relatively undiscovered as a vacation spot. Its
low profile is actually an advantage because visitors don't have to deal
with immense crowds and overwhelming noise. Instead, you're treated to a
way of life that delights in a slower pace and the familial flavor of a
small community. If you're considering a new place to visit on holiday,
explore what the Lake District has to offer.
